Lillah
A Sincere Charity, A Lasting Impact
” Believe in Allah and His Messenger and spend out of that in which He has made you successors. For those who have believed among you and spent, there will be a great reward.”
– Surah Al-Hadid 57:7
What is Lillah?
Lillah literally means ‘for Allah’.
Lillah is a voluntary form of charity given with the intention for the pleasure of Allah SWT – with no expectations, conditions, or obligations in return. When given for the sake of Allah, and to gain Allah’s pleasure alone, the rewards of Lillah are vast.
- Lillah can be given to any charitable cause
- It is not limited to a specific group of people
- It can be used to build and support institutions, pay staff, run dawah programmes, fund education, and much more
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.”
– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261
Your Lillah donation is a seed; one that continues to grow in reward every time someone benefits from the knowledge, services, or support you helped make possible.
What is the difference between Zakat and Lillah?
Unlike Zakat, which has a number of stipulations regarding the type of assistance it can provide, Lillah can be used for any project or programme which is of benefit to people and/or Islamic institutions.
“O you who believe, spend of the wealth We have bestowed upon you (in Allah’s way), before the Day comes when there shall be no buying and no selling; when neither friendship nor intercession will be of any avail.”
– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:254
What is the difference between Sadaqah and Lillah?
There are several different types of Sadaqah, such as Aqeeqah, Kaffarah, and Fidya.
Lillah is also a type of Sadaqah donation and similarly to Sadaqah, it is not compulsory, however it is an act that pleases Allah SWT. Unlike Zakat, which has a number of stipulations on how it can be spent; there is no minimum amount and there is no restriction on who can receive the funds.
Why your Lillah Matters?
Donations can be used to fund Mosques and other institutions such as health centres and schools, which benefit many people. It can also be used to invest in the charity and its projects and ensuring your donations reach further in its impacts. Your Lillah can very pleasing to Allah Almighty, and can help large numbers of people.
“O you who believe, spend of the wealth We have bestowed upon you (in Allah’s way), before the Day comes when there shall be no buying and no selling; when neither friendship nor intercession will be of any avail.”
– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:254
How much should you give for Lillah?
As with Sadaqah, there is no set amount which you should give for Lillah. For us to please Allah SWT, we should donate as much voluntary charity as possible. We are encouraged, time and time again in the Holy Qu’ran to give generously, without fearing the consequences.
“Those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.”
– Surah Al-Baqarah 2:262
